WISHING WELL APPEAL
Residents can help make a difference to children in need this festive season by donating new books to Moreton Bay Region Libraries’ Christmas Wishing Well Books for Kids Appeal.
The appeal will run from 1st November to 10th December. Residents are encouraged to purchase a new book and drop it into the wishing well at their nearest library or the mobile library every second Monday afternoon on its visit to Hay Cottage. All donated books will be handed over to The Smith Family for distribution in time for Christmas.
HAY COTTAGE – 21 YEARS YOUNG
I had the pleasure in early October of joining with members of the Hay Cottage Arts and Crafts Association to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the cottage’s relocation to Roderick Cruice Park from the precinct of Lake Samsonvale. Despite the very inclement weather, the volunteers were well prepared and an enjoyable morning tea was had by all. Congratulations to the Association for the contribution they make to the locations of interest around our community and I look forward to continuing my and Council’s support in the years to come.
OVER 75’s AND STILL YOUNG
May I add my thanks to the Dayboro Districts Historical Society for organising the recent function for those people aged 75 years and over who grew up in the Dayboro District. I had the pleasure of dropping into this event for a short visit and was overwhelmed at the numbers who had been able to attend and share in stories and reminiscing about old times. Events such as this do help build strong communities and provide the opportunity for those who, for one reason or another have left the district, to stay in touch with former friends.
OCEAN VIEW FIRE BRIGADE – 50 YEARS ON AND STILL FIGHTING FIRES
The last month has been a busy period for me in the Dayboro area and one event that ranked highly in my diary was to share in the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Ocean View Fire Brigade. As a 25 year veteran of the Samford Rural Fire Brigade, I was pleased to share in the Ocean View Fire Brigade’s celebrations and witness the highlights which saw former Oceanview State School teacher Beryl Nielsen share stories of her time as a teacher of brigade members such as Neville Juffs.
COUNCIL SUPPORTS BUSINESS
Council actively supports business in the region so that jobs can be grown locally. Council sponsors regular lunch and breakfast meetings along with a variety of workshop topics which bring key speakers and presenters within reach of local business. The next business event will be held on Friday 19 November 2010 at the Redcliffe Leagues Club from 12noon to 2pm. This month’s guest speaker is Ric Charlesworth, one of Australia’s most successful coaches and a former Olympic hockey player. The cost to attend the lunch is $65 and bookings can be made by contacting Council on 3205 0555.
SES WEEK – 6th to 14th November
The State Emergency Service is manned by volunteer men and women who care about their communities as they have done during last month’s flooding. This month is to recognize the everyday heroes for being there to help protect the community when disaster strikes. For more information about how to joining the SES, please visit the following website www.emergency.qld.gov.au/ses
LOCAL LAWS REVIEWED
Council is currently undertaking a review of local laws with the aim of establishing a new set of local and subordinate laws that meet the needs of the community and comply with State legislation. These new draft laws cover important issues such as the keeping of animals, parking, use of roads, parks and local government areas and the commercial use of public space. These draft laws were released for community consultation on Monday 25th October 2010, and feedback and comment is required by Sunday 5th December 2010. A link will be available on Council’s website and additional information is also available in the October edition of Council’s newsletter ‘Moreton Living’.
