We at the Air (Association of Independent Retirees ) normally meet at the Wavell Heights Community Hall in Edinburgh Castle Road above the Bowls Club on the third Friday of the month, our meeting times start around 09.30 am finishing about noon.  This month being the 15th of August.

Aug2014_KOALA ACTION

Thirty plus koalas have been displaced by the destruction of koala habitat at Lawnton Lakes Estate.  They have moved into trees along the North Pine River and Lawnton Pocket Road which they are subsequently over browsing.  They cannot move out of the site safely because the koalas are surrounded by high density residential habitat and/or busy main roads.

July2014_History of the Victoria Cross

The Victoria Cross had its origins in the Crimean War. This was the first major war that was reported on by war correspondents in the field.  In this case, William Howard Russell of “The Times” reported on the bravery of the common soldier and pushed for a bravery award that could be given to the common soldier in recognition of his bravery.  At this time, only senior officers were awarded medals for bravery as it was deemed that it was their leadership that drove men on to victory.
