Apr12_A LIONS TALE

Lions once again have underpinned community events, including the provision and management of the PA system at the Meet the Candidates evening organised by the Dayboro Grapevine crew – members of the Dayboro Regional Information Network Inc.
MOVIE NEWS:  The March movie, Happy Feet 2 was considerably down on attendance, and this was probably due to the torrential rain that fell from 3 o’clock onwards, and the other events which were scheduled on that evening.  Lions volunteers run the cinema as a socially rich community event, and hope to break even on costs. We pay out $600+ to run a movie, and on this occasion the door takings did not cover it.  However, large attendances such as Red Dog last November give us sufficient fat to buoy up losses.
Regarding the movies, there is an accelerating swing to digital media and the phasing out of 35mm reel film.  I have contacted the main distributors, and am told that film will be phased out in the next two years.  This tolls the bell for our 1946 projector, and the Dayboro Cinema which has been running since the 1920s.  The digital movies are now sent to cinemas on large capacity hard disks, and run under a proprietary operating system.  The projectors which run this have dropped in price to around $140,000, and the distributors require a minimum hire period, usually 28 days.  This is obviously not viable for us.  The movies we show are current and not available on DVD, so the idea of using a good video projector (cost $6000 or so) loses the advantage.  There are also considerable royalties to pay on public showings of DVD movies.  Hmmm… what then??
NEXT MOVIE – 21st April “Hugo”:
The movie for 21st April is HUGO  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_%28film%29 a family adventure drama which has been awarded 5 Oscars, and is a break from the animated movies we often show.
Open Meetings:  We are trialling a different dinner meeting venue.  On the fourth Wednesday of each month we will be holding our public meetings in the Uniting Church room, opposite the butchery.  These meetings are open to all and a presentation of general interest is given.  A good two-course meal can be provided for $20.  All are welcome to attend, whether a meal is ordered or not.  Having said this, the April open meeting is not on, but the annual Diggers’ Lunch at the Footy Club will be on Saturday 21st April.  All returned Service personnel are invited as guests of the Dayboro Lions at this event, and Brian Marfleet will be giving a presentation: “Vietnam 1970 and 2010, then and now”
Please contact Richard Hawkins 3289 9208 to attend this friendly event.
The ANZAC day Dawn service (Now relocated to the Cenotaph in Roderick Cruice Park . . . Near the Swimming Pool).  This a tradition which attracts some 150+ solemn souls at dawn to experience the poignant moment.  Lions work in the background here, setting up the PA system and other logistic support to help the event run smoothly.  Again, after the 9:00am parade, some 400+ now gather at the Showgrounds for the morning service, and this has become a great event for promoting the township’s camaraderie.
….More Next Month
