Apr12_BOB MILLAR COMMITS TO ANOTHER TERM OF COUNCIL
In announcing his nomination recently for the 28th April Local Government Elections, Councillor Bob Millar commented that representing 600 square kilometres of the Moreton Bay Region since the Council amalgamations in March 2008 had been full of challenges and exciting achievements for both himself and many of the 30,000 residents of Division 11.
“Despite the huge impact of amalgamation, the effects of the global financial crisis on businesses and ratepayers alike, and the impact of the loss of State Government grants, this term of council has seen increased spending on services and facilities across my Division, more than $100 million reduction in council’s operating expenditure, average residential rate increases less than inflation, and council achieving a strong financial rating,” said Cr Millar.
“From significant new sporting facilities in Samford, Dayboro and soon to be in Narangba, to improved roads and pathway networks in Mt Nebo, Dayboro, Narangba to name a few, I have been active in attracting record capital investment in Division 11”, Cr Millar said.
“With most of the catchments of the South Pine and North Pine Rivers and their many tributaries being located in the expanses of Division 11, the abnormal rain and flood periods of the last 15 months have caused considerable damage, nuisance and in some cases considerable stress for many of our residents. Some of these residents have had to contend with periods of limited access across creek crossings that are a feature of rural living. Floods also impact heavily on council’s resources as it continues to invest increasing amounts of money in the maintenance and reconstruction of its road and drainage networks to address both short and long term issues. It is little known that the Moreton Bay Region is some 60% greater in area than the Brisbane City Council but with only a fraction of the population and rate base” said Cr Millar.
“Looking to the future, I will continue to fight for yet more facilities right across the Division to meet the sporting, recreational, artistic and cultural needs of our diverse communities. Locally, this will include amongst other projects, facilities for groups such as the Dayboro Dodgers Netball and Dayboro Men’s Shed. Delivering the Dayboro Heritage Trail project, pedestrian access to the village from Alcheringa Estate and further investment in local paths, road and drainage infrastructure, are also on my radar”, said Cr Millar.
“In acknowledging the cost of living pressures that many residents are experiencing, I am committed to using my financial skills to ensure that council’s budgets are responsibly managed, reflect the communities interests as identified through the Community and Corporate Plans and that ratepayers recieve value for money” Cr Millar said.
“It has been an honour and my privilege to have represented the residents of Division 11 for the past four years and I trust that as you all head off to vote on the 28th April, you give thought to what has been achieved and planned for the future of this, the third largest council in Australia.
