YEAR OF THE SCOUT in 2008

In recognition of the Centenary of Australian Scouting, the Australian Government has declared 2008 ‘Year of the Scout’.  During an official hand-over ceremony at Bondi Beach in December, Scouts Australia received the ‘Year of’ flags from Surf Lifesaving Australia who celebrated their centenary year in 2007.

In early 1908, Scouting was established in the Commonwealth of Australia. After Lord Baden-Powell’s visit in 1912, the extension of the Movement in Australia began to really grow.

Across Australia, today’s Scouts learn social and leadership skills through challenge and outdoor adventure including canoeing, rock climbing and caving.  Touching the lives of many Australians throughout the years, former Scouts include Dick Smith, Jamie Durie and Bert Newton.

Scouts Australia Chief Commissioner John Ravenhall AM said the Year of the Scout commemorates a major milestone for Scouts Australia.

“It will provide us with an excellent opportunity to promote the benefits of Scouting to all young Australians and at the same time encourage more adults to take on volunteer leadership roles.”

Young people and leaders interested in joining the Movement can find out more by calling 1800 SCOUTS (726 887) or visit www.scouts.com.au.
