“An Afternoon at the Proms”
with Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra
with Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra
The 2012 Mt Mee Sunday Concert season winds up with dash and style from 2pm on Sunday 11th November.
The delightful Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra entertains with another of their ever-popular “Afternoon at the Proms”.
Under the baton of the irrepressible Adrian King, some fifty musicians will bring to life the creations of some of the world’s greatest composers – Elgar, Holst, Walton, Tchaikovsky and more. And in a change of pace and style there will be a salute to the era of those wonderful big bands – Basie, Ellington, Miller, Goodman et al.
Guest soprano Sally Harrison is no stranger to Mt Mee or this orchestra.
Sally, who appeared in our Proms concert last year, was (like Adrian) born in England, but on reaching the age of reason she chose (like Adrian) to settle in Australia. As a young girl Sally aspired to ballet, but fortunately (for us) she chose to turn to music – her other great love.
As a young performer she sang almost all of the Gilbert and Sullivan heroines, characters that she still cherishes. She sang with South Australian Opera for almost a decade before relocating to Sydney where she returned to Gilbert and Sullivan for a couple of years. Since moving to Brisbane her gigs have included Operatif! Opera Queensland and numerous solo engagements.
Brilliant young schoolgirl guest ‘cellist Ruby Valks will perform two movements from Elgar’s Concerto in E minor. Ruby is a simply outstanding talent – as her performance will attest.
The concert will wind up towards the traditional big finish with “Waltzing Matilda”, Parry’s stirring “Jerusalem” and Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance”. The audience is required at this stage to join with the orchestra and soloists, and conductor Adrian will severely punish any reluctant performers. This is flag and funny hat time – be sure to come suitably equipped!
The concert will begin in orderly fashion at 2pm and will break for that legendary complimentary ‘Country’ afternoon tea. But things will become a little less formal as the second half progresses towards that patriotic climax. So don’t forget to bring that silly hat, that flag and that voice!
Book now with Kay (5498 2104) or Joyce (5498 2270).
And, be warned that this concert will be a sell- out.
Book early!
