Oct2012_PUPPY TRAINING WITH A LOCAL TWIST
Call the vet today on 3425 2222 to book your puppy preschool place or nurse consult session.
We know all too well that the world of dog training can be daunting for new puppy owners. Celebrity dog whisperers make it look so easy, but the reality can be much more frustrating and tiring when we try it at home.
Old Mill Vet Surgery’s newest recruit, senior nurse Renae Ziebarth (nee McKenzie), has 15 years experience under her belt and is here to show new ‘parents’ the secrets to a well behaved puppy.
The Puppy Preschool program at Old Mill Vet Surgery has been going for many years, but under Renae’s guidance there will be an even better array of training ideas and a vast knowledge of your puppy’s expected learning and developmental stages. The preschool classes run for 4 consecutive Tuesday evenings, and must be booked in advance.
Renae’s background in nursing began 15 years ago and she said she has always had a special interest in the behavioural side of pet care. Puppy Preschool sets your dog up to be a well balanced family member, who walks gently on a leash, and doesn’t jump or bark inappropriately. They are respectful of all humans, but remain keen to play.
“The sad part of my job is that more than 85% of all dogs taken to the RSPCA have behavioural issues. The majority of these dogs are then euthanized as they can’t be re-homed. Well mannered, stimulated pets are always healthier in the long term and the family genuinely enjoys interacting with them. Sometimes dog training can seem daunting, even to the most experienced owners, so I enjoy being part of the learning process for both humans and dogs”
Whilst new to the Old Mill Vet Surgery itself, Renae is well and truly a local, having spent her childhood playing in her grandmother’s Farm and Vet Supplies shop in the main street, while her grandfather had the original Blacksmith shop. With the maiden name, McKenzie, there is no questioning that she knows the area and the types of pet problems that are unique to Dayboro residents.
And don’t despair if your dog is a little more ‘pensioner’ than ‘puppy’, as anyone can book a Nurse Consult with Renae to discuss behavioural issues for dogs of any age. These are done during normal clinic hours and each consult goes for 30 minutes, so there is plenty of time to cover all the topics that you may need assistance with.
