Nov2014_Veterinary dermatology gets under Dr John’s skin

Whilst the Spring months can make our eyes water and our nose run, spare a thought for our animal friends who can also experience allergies that can have a massive impact on their lives.
Old Mill Animal Hospital veterinarian, Dr John Hutt – also a resident of Dermatology with Queensland Veterinary Specialists – is out to ease the itching and pain associated with seasonal allergies, as well as lifelong dermatology disorders.
Dr John said food and environmental allergies are much more common than most owners expect, and the approach is to address the triggers and manage the symptoms, more so than looking for a magical ‘cure’.  Getting to the bottom of trigger foods, parasites or environments is a journey of eliminating certain food groups or keeping a diary of the days and symptoms when they are at their worst.  An example of this might be the cat that is only itchy when it eats supermarket brands of food (due to differing/unknown meat products in each bag) or the dog whose skin flares up when it visits a particular backyard or paddock.
While Dr John is still completing his Residency, he is certainly no stranger to the Veterinary Dermatology world – he has received the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Dermatology and has been the President of the British Veterinary Dermatology Study Group.
The best part about Dr John’s work at the Old Mill Animal Hospital, is that you can access his special skills and extra education on Saturday mornings, at our normal General Practice prices!  To book your pet in for a Dermatological consultation with Dr John, submit a booking on the website at www.oldmillvet.com  or call 3425 2222 during clinic hours.
