Nov2014_SO WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

by Ryle Winn
I’m a really light sleeper. I like it like that.  Actually I don’t have a choice so I just say that.  Truly though, I hear the night birds – curlews, owls, others I don’t know but I still hear them – and the cough of the odd fox, plenty of dingoes, wild pigs grunting, flying foxes.  Everything.

I suppose I must sleep soundly enough sometimes because at 4.45am I’m zonked out – until the crows start.  Like clockwork. Any other time too, especially when I’m writing.
They drive me to distraction.
One day I grabbed the shotgun to put a shot into a bush beside them to scare them off and I gave a mickey bird a hurry-up instead but it did nothing to discourage the crows.  Cartridges are too dear anyway.
Yep.  Right on 4.45.  Every day.
My old stockwhip flew to bits a long while ago so I decided to try another tactic.  Last week I bought a new one.  Bloody $100 but its a little beauty.  Australian made too.
Alright you buggers cop this.
I started to wake at 4.40 just to get ready to chase them. Know what?  Haven’t heard or sighted a crow all week.
I want them to come back so I can chase them away again. Great-great granny came from County Clare.  Explain anything?
