MT MEE NEWS Feb 2008

By Ian Wells

Gumboots! Rain! Mud! Rain!  Pink-Eye! Wormy calves! Rain!  Mud! Thistles!. Stinking Roger! Rain! Mud!

What a summer we are having! But there is grass and water too, what a novelty for our sunburned hills!

Our daughter and her family came over to the Sunshine State from the Land of the Long White Cloud for two weeks and Christmas. They didn’t see the sun once.  But they went home to clear warm sunny days – certainly aberrant weather for Auckland too!

This is the first time since we have been on the Mountain that we have seen pink-eye or barber’s pole anaemia in young calves on their mothers – so be warned!

Neighbour Dan and I have both lost calves to dingos, so I phoned Rod Thomas on his new numbers 3205 2297 and 0400 018 949. He came up very promptly and “cased the joints”.  He has since made several visits – and has already bowled a dingo type bitch and a dingo-crossbred dog.  Rod is enthusiastic and extremely helpful and he is very happy to get the opportunity to chase feral dogs.  That’s good, because there are plenty more where those two came from, and it seems that our baiting days are over.

It is wonderful to see our Squire Tumbridge regaining form after his brush with the cardiac surgeons.  The Mountain’s “Big Loser” has completed her surgery too, but is aiming to retain her new sylph like form.  Len Maroske has sold his business and is still lodged in the grip of the medicos though, and is spending a lot of time at Nambour for radiation therapy. We are all wishing him to be well soon, and looking forward to hearing him howl up a dog or two again.

We have (as I write) still not had any cases of horse flu on the Mountain and this speaks volumes for the care people have taken to stay in line with the rules. In fact, as I write there has been no new case in Queensland since some days before Christmas. Perhaps we are going to win this one after all!

Since my last column we have had the “Carols on the Mountain” in the school grounds. The weather was kind – after a shaky start, and there was a good roll up. The school children’s contributions were just wonderful and deserve special mention – top marks to Chris Shultz and staff!

We had the traditional carols in the newly refurbished “little” Church.  As usual this was a cosy and heart-warming community evening followed by supper in the Hall.

And for once Ross and Di showed a bit of sense, closed the restaurant and went visiting friends and relaxing on New Years Eve.  Their life is spent in trying to please others.

There were two major Hall events before Christmas – both were major long term projects which came to fruition.

This lists the people from the Mountain who have served in post WW2 conflicts – Malaya, Korea, Viet Nam and East Timor .  The little ceremony was touching, not in the least because five of the ten people named were present – some having travelled a long distance. Needless to say, it was followed by a cup of tea and a bite to eat – and a drop or two of Lion-Nathan’s best.

The Hall Committee is currently negotiating a November Sunday afternoon appearance with the Sunshine Coast Orchestra.  The Sunday afternoon concerts are very popular and we already have the St Lucia Orchestra returning in June and the Savoyard Singers in September.

Kay, Anne Hardwick and I went to a Sunshine Coast Orchestra prom concert in Kawana just before Christmas.  The music was excellent and it was great fun. And there, as large as life, were our own Les Suart on tympani and Cathy Croot on percussion.  The way in which Cathy would fix her eye on some male in the audience and then crash those cymbals together was plainly terrifying!

These organizations only come to our little country venue because the audiences are so warm and appreciative.  Keep up the good work folks!

Stop Press Thurs 24th Jan:  Several chainsaws have just been stolen from Mt Mee.  We understand that thieves were disturbed a few days ago while working over the Cedarton area and it is possible that they have shifted their operation to the Mountain.  It is worthwhile checking that your property is secure.

Councillor Greg Chippendale formally opened the new toilet block, which was jointly funded by the Hall and by Council.  This was a momentous occasion and it was celebrated with a luncheon for those involved.
