Atlas’s second chance in the world
After Atlas was discovered malnourished and neglected on a large paint horse stud, his new owner Tara knew she had a long road ahead with him. He was a severely malnourished stallion with an umbilical hernia and was in need of training, veterinary care and TLC.
Atlas was brought to Old Mill Animal Hospital’s new equine facility for a sleepover, and to perform his castration and umbilical repair surgery.
The equine team of Dr Slade, Joe and Shay coordinated an efficient surgery which repaired the one finger-span hernia, and completed his orchidectomy. Atlas remained stable throughout the procedure and had a perfect wake-up after his anaesthesia.
He stayed in hospital under observation for the following week for pain relief, surgical site checks and twice-daily antibiotic injections. Atlas loved his medicating regime, as he received a biscuit of lucerne with each injection, so would cheekily seek out the nurses for the routine!
After discharge, Atlas visited again for his 2 week recheck and his first ever dental procedure. He has recovered spectacularly in Tara’s care and we should only need to see him for his dentistry from now on. What an amazing difference Tara has made to Atlas’s life!
