State Member for Pine Rivers
THE QUEENSLAND PLAN
Three local delegates Alison Price, Jerome deKretzer and Trevor Nelson-Jones from the Pine Rivers electorate represented our community in Mackay as the process commenced to help shape Queensland’s future.
The Queensland Plan will be a plan created by Queenslanders, for Queensland.
The Delegates and Member for Pine Rivers were in Mackay on Friday 10th May, joining more than 400 other Queenslanders as they considered what issues we need to discuss across the state.  They considered the major trends likely to affect our state, identified some issues we need to discuss in Pine Rivers, and started the conversations about where we want to be in 30 years.
All community members will now have an opportunity to join the conversation on The Queensland Plan, particularly through giving their opinions on six statewide questions that were developed at the Summit.
In the context of living in the community, how do we move our focus from ‘me’ to ‘we’?
How do we create and foster an education culture that teaches skills and values to meet global challenges and optimises regional strengths?
How do we empower and educate individuals, communities and institutions to embrace responsibility for an active and healthy lifestyle?
How do we structure our economy to ensure our children inherit a resilient future?
How do we strengthen our economic future and achieve sustainable landscapes?
How do we attract and retain the brightest minds and ideas where they are most needed and capitalise on global opportunities?
The Pine Rivers Summit delegates are also finalizing a number of local questions that will also be discussed.
From May through to August, myself and the Pine Rivers Summit delegates will be engaging in a number of consultations and community discussions to gather thoughts and opinions to contribute to The Queensland Plan.
CHECK YOUR POWER BILLS AND KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Queensland energy and water consumers have been encouraged to go to the Ombudsman when they have urgent questions or need advice in relation to their bills.
However, before contacting the Ombudsman, your first step is to read your bills first and discuss concerns with your retailer.
Energy and Water Ombudsman Forbes Smith said his office provides a free service to Queensland consumers with a timely, effective, independent and just way of resolving disputes.  They can also help you to understand their rights and obligations in what can be quite a complex business, at no cost to the consumer.
There are also great groups like Uniting Care Community, the Salvation Army and Regional Housing who are outlets for the Home Energy Saver Scheme (HESS) who can assist people on lower incomes manage their electricity bills.
The Newman Government is conducting critical reforms to reduce the cost of poles and wires, curb back the impact of the Solar Bonus Scheme on bills and has a strong stance against the Carbon Tax, but it is also vital that customers are aware and empowered about what is going on to their power bills.
Customers can contact the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland on 1800 662 837 and the HESS national helpline on 1800 007 001 to receive assistance.

COST OF LIVING:
Everyone is concerned by the rising cost of living.  Making ends meet is increasingly causing families, retirees and youth to try to stretch their $$ further and to prioritise their expenditure.
On Tuesday 11th June, I am holding a ‘Cost of Living forum’.  My special guest will be The Hon Mark McArdle, Minister for Energy and Water Supply.
Discussion will relate to issues around the cost of living.  There will be a panel discussion and Question and Answer session with the Minister about electricity and water issues.
Resources will be available to help you manage your costs of living.  I will be launching a new cost of living resource at this event.
Venue: Pendicup Community Centre, Samsonvale Road, Warner from 7pm to 8.30pm
