July2014_Senior Pet Club Is Here

Winter is certainly here.  With the cooler weather we need to be thinking of our senior pets, they, like us can suffer from painful arthritis and joint degeneration which is definitely more noticeable in the colder months. Some of the changes you may notice include; a reluctance to jump e.g. into the car, stiffness after exercise, generally slowing down and decreased activity levels.
There are several steps we can take to help our furry friends with this discomfort, from comfortable bedding in a draught free area and winter coats to dietary supplements, veterinary prescribed medication, weight management and gentle exercise.
Our pets age more rapidly than we do and  on average dogs are considered to have entered their senior years by the age of 7 years.  At this point we need to be particularly vigilant with regards to routine health checks to ensure their continued good health.  Kidney disease for example may creep up without any obvious symptoms until it is fairly advanced.  To this end we are delighted to advise that we now offer complimentary membership to our ‘senior pet club’.  Dogs aged 7 years and over are eligible to join.  Members need to be a client of our practice, and benefits include; a complimentary health check 6 months after their annual vaccination, a free urinalysis and discount on any in-house blood testing.  By having bi-annual health checks we hope to facilitate early detection and intervention of senior pet related diseases.  At this time we can discuss any dietary changes and any concerns you might have.
We have also commenced a complimentary weight loss clinic which is proving very popular and we are happy to say that all participants are doing really well and losing weight.  If you think your pet is looking a little portly, feel free to give us a call and make an appointment.  We are happy to work out a plan to suit your pet.  Additional weight impacts on every aspect of your pet’s health and wellbeing, from arthritis to heart disease.  Losing those extra kilos will help keep your pet healthier and more active throughout their life.
How quickly time flies!  Here we are in July already and it is 12 months since we celebrated the official opening of our new clinic.  We have finally settled in and are loving all the extra space.  If you haven’t been in to see us yet, feel free to drop in and have a look around.  We’d love to see you.
