THE BOG TRAIN CLONMACNOISE, OFFALY IN THE IRISH REPUBLIC

This was our third trip to the Irish Republic and each time as we drove around the countryside we saw the peat stacked neatly in rows, and wondered about it. What was peat? Why was it stacked like that? How did they dig it out? (as we had never seen it being actually dug), and did they use it for purposes other than heating?

DAYBORO DAY AWARD WINNERS FOR 2008

It was indeed a bright sunny day on Sunday 25th May and, scattered amid the crowd at the official opening were some folk rather bemused at the insistence of family and friends that they be there!  All was revealed as the recipients of this year’s Dayboro Day Awards were announced.
The Business Recognition Award, presented by Federal Member for Dickson, Peter Dutton, went to Devin and Gloria Linnane of Dayboro Post Office.
Councillor Bob Millar presented the Resident of the Year Award to Craig Doyle. 
Lonneke Bevan received the Young Achiever Award, which was presented by Senator Claire Moore and State Member for Kurwongbah, Linda Lavarch.

Dayboro Resident Takes out First Prize in Memories of Pine Category
Ian Flinders was most pleased with his entry when he learned, on his arrival at the Awards function on Friday 23rd May, that it had already been sold.  When his entry was announced as winner in its category, a loud “YES” issued from his lips!  I guess the $500 prize money and money from the sale will go on another holiday jaunt!  Congratulations Ian.
