Papua New Guinea

HISTORY

PNG was settled more than 30,000 years ago, although the first European sighting was made in 1512 by Portuguese explorers. It was named New Guinea by the Dutch explorers who followed. Missionaries and traders exerted a great influence, and today cultural heritage is largely preserved by small, independent villages.  The country was initially divided between the Dutch, Germans and British. Australia took control of the British sector in 1905, and later captured the German sector during World War I.  The country, fully independent since September 16, 1975, has a freely elected democratic government. Papua New Guinea became the 142nd member of the United Nations on October, 10, 1975 and is also a member of the British Commonwealth. Strong ties to Australia remain.

LOCAL SUPPORT GROUP RUNS CANCER INFORMATION COURSE

A local branch of Canhelp Australia Wide, a charitable non-profit organization, has been established in the Samford-Dayboro area as a result of the excellent attendance at the presentation by Darryl Jones at the Samford Bowls Club on November 10th 2007.

Darryl and wife Jan, founders of Canhelp Australia Wide were thrilled with the response from so many eager to learn from their years of experience in helping people overcome cancer and other health issues.

The following morning a meeting was also well attended by people who were willing to establish a group in Samford to learn more about Darryl’s program in order to help others as “Cancer Buddies”.

The first stage in the learning process will be a weekend course on 22/23/24th February 2008 entitled “The Philosophy of Cancer”.  This weekend will be held at Armstrong Creek near Dayboro. (Please note this is not a live-in weekend).

In this course participants will learn about such things as – What is cancer?  What causes cancer? and How to support someone with cancer to help them achieve a positive outcome.

Sessions will be presented by Canhelp Trainers, including Darryl Jones.  Course numbers are limited and bookings are essential.  Please phone Ian Wills (07) 3289 9220 or 0428 188 101 for more information or to secure your position.  Bookings close Friday 15th February.

Anyone wishing to know more about Darryl’s program can attend a free

DVD showing at Ian & Narelle Wills’ place.  Please ring Ian on 3289 9220 if you would like to see this.

NETWORK TOPIC Feb 2008

Whilst everything is going well on the “horse flu” scene the National Management Group (NMG) stresses that it is critical that everyone continues to comply with restrictions.  A major setback could occur if someone did the wrong thing.

We’d really like to completely eradicate this virus from Australian shores.  If achieving that means spraying your hands and dipping your shoes in the tray of disinfectant before entering a local store, it really isn’t too much to ask is it?  It is for just a bit longer folks!  You can do it!
