Apr2014_The Cub Scouts Say it with Flowers

For the first time Dayboro cubs are going to be represented at Cuboree.  Cuboree is a 6 day camp held every 2 years with cub scouts aged 9 years and over from all over the state. This year Dayboro Scout group is sending 9 cubs to Cuboree 2014 being held in Maryborough during the September school holidays.

To help the families towards the costs of this event the cubs parents and leaders did some brainstorming to come up with different ideas to fundraise for the event.  So instead of a Pie or Lamington Drive, the cubs held a “Say It With Flowers” Drive.
The cubs collected orders for floral posies, the person placing the order could record a personal message for the recipient on the order form.  Melissa Hainwright, from Design Spot designed and donated the order forms and personal cards to attach to the posy jars.  The idea was flowers can say so much.  The Cub Leaders, Kaa and Chil used this opportunity for the cub scouts to work on their community badge while creating some community kindness.
To keep all our overheads down for the event, the cub scouts collect recycled jars for the posies and removed all the labels, families pruned their gardens to donate all the foliage.
Last Saturday 15 March 2014, when the doors closed to the public, Paddington business owner of Francesca’s Flowers, Francesca Petherbridge opened the doors to 17 cub scouts from the Dayboro Scout Group.  Francesca’s Flowers is not only a florist, but also a relaxing place to enjoy a coffee and cake.  In addition the business runs different floral workshops on a regular basis.  She generously gave her time and beautiful space for the cubs to learn basic floristry skills to prepare 65 posy jars.  They prepared the posy jars with some terrific help from parents and a grandmother.  After preparing the orders the cub scouts wrote the personal messages on the cards and if requested delivered the floral order to the recipients the following day in the Dayboro and district areas to create and share kindness in our community.  There were happy tears from some unexpected recipients and cuddles and high fives for our cub scouts who did an amazing job.
Majority of the cub scouts are boys and initially when the idea was planned some boys questioned the concept playing with flowers.  Through the talent, calmness and skill of Francesca all the cub scouts embraced the event with fun and enthusiasm, with the end result being some absolute beautiful floral creations.  The feedback from the cub scouts, parents and the community have been wonderful and we can certainly say these children appreciate more the importance to give some community kindness.  A special thanks to the business owners from, Francesca’s Flowers and Design Spot who were so supportive and generous to our group.  And lastly, thanks go to everyone who placed an order and made it such a successful fundraiser.
