LIONS – We Serve

Busy times – the Lions are ramping up for the festive season as Christmas approaches.  With the usual financial donation to the School for their leavers’ booklet, preparatory support for Carols under the Big Tree in Samsonvale, Swaggies support and the supply and packing of 300+ lolly bags for Santa’s visit through Dayboro, to name only some.

And . . . on the yuletide theme . . . don’t forget your delicious Christmas cakes from Maggie at the ECU.

You may have noticed the new sturdy signs that have replaced the derelict and ageing Dayboro Services Clubs welcome on the entries into town.  Dayboro lions have provided and, together with some re-emerged past helpers, have erected these.  They will soon be populated with the emblems of the service clubs, and give a smarter appearance for visitors to the town.

It is good to see support for the town being given by local businesses that have placed advertisements in the new directory to be released in 2016.  This is a great way of giving to the community, as it is our major source of funding.  Remember this when you require a tradie or supplies – look in your directory first.

To commemorate Remembrance Day, 100 years after some of the terrible battles in the trenches, Dayboro Lions are sponsoring a Concert performance:  The Great War.  On Sunday 15th November, 3pm.

http://www.cloudstreet.org/thegreatwar/performance.html and see the article within this Grapevine.

This is a professional event staged by an international performer, and will prove to be a riveting afternoon.

In the style of Dayboro Lions, we look for value-added to our donations etc, so All ticket and door proceeds are being donated to Legacy.  (Brisbane Legacy currently cares for more than 8,000 widows and 250 dependants of the 90,000 widows and 1900 children and disabled dependants throughout Australia)

Food, hot drinks, and a bar are available, with profits from these also going to Legacy.

From war to peace…

Another new experimental venture is the pilot running of “The Circle”, a weekly meeting of meditating, chanting, etc, to promote the wellbeing of the mind.  This is in development phase, and invitations to join will be rolled out when established.  Watch this space!

Movies:  The movie Tomorrowland attracted a reasonable audience, which ensures the continuance of our local movie scene.  We were again aided in setting up by the Scouts, who were giving back for the Lions’ financial support of the Dayboro Scout Group.

Next movie, on 21st November is the family movie, the Pixar animated Inside Out.  Suitable for the young family and entertaining for us older guys too!  Door opens 6:30pm, with movie starting at 7pm.  Our projectionist – Lion Brent has used his technical skills to improve sound and integrate movie trailers into the evening.  It only gets better!

Dinner meeting in November is to be the usual Lions Christmas break-up event, by invitation.  But a great substitute for your monthly day out is the Great War performance mentioned above!

Lions were also involved in Haz day, with the supply and operation of our ‘pie-cart’ to serve hot dogs and drinks.  Again this was all profits to the day.  It was good to see so many volunteer Lions turning up in their new uniform shirts (see pic) to support the cause.

Another angle of community support of mutual benefit was the coordination of grade 11, Will Oliver to find several projects to help the town for his 50 hours voluntary community service that the Steiner School requires of its students.  This proved to be an excellent experience for all.
