Polite Pets are everyone’s best friends!
We all know a pet that needs some behaviour guidance – the ones that jump up on you when you visit friends, cry when they are left alone, or growl when you sit in ‘their’ spot. Whilst some owners may think it’s just a ‘quirk’, these are actually important behaviour issues that need proper attention.
Now, a new program at Old Mill Animal Hospital is tackling these issues, and many more, for cat and dog owners alike. The Polite Pets Program is run by qualified, experienced team members, Amanda and Renae, and centres around positive reinforcement, with practical homework for all family members.
All too often behaviour and training issues are overlooked as just being ‘a bit cheeky’ and it’s a deep-rooted habit by the time we usually see them. The majority of cats and dogs that get surrendered to the RSPCA are there for perceived behavioural issues, and you can bet anything that many of these pets could be trained out of their naughty habits with just a little bit of effort. Of those surrendered, overcrowding means many pets are put to sleep without a second chance. We can all help change this statistic!
The Polite Pets Program starts with an extensive questionnaire to gain valuable insight into the lifestyle and interactions of your pets and family. Each session takes around 20 minutes and some families may only need one session to get them back on track to a perfectly polite pet. Sessions finish with take-home tips and homework to go on with in your own time.
These sessions are perfect for any pet owner that has noticed: aggression, anxious behaviours, inappropriate toileting, difficulty walking on lead, inappropriate vocalising, phobias, problems with new human or pet interactions and inappropriate sexual behaviours. The Polite Pets Program is also available for owners who may see another veterinarian for their routine care, but wish to have their pet assessed by the Polite Pet trainers.
