Nov2010_SPOTLIGHT ON HERITAGE ROSES
Early October saw a gathering of Heritage Rose enthusiasts to welcome 82 visitors from all states of Australia, New Zealand, United States of America and South Africa to the garden of Terry and Leonie Kearney at “Rosevale Homestead” at Samsonvale.
The visitors were all members of “Heritage Roses in Australia Inc.” attending a conference in Brisbane hosted by the Queensland Branch of Heritage Roses.
A delicious morning tea was supplied by the Samford Anglican Ladies Group and while a couple rested in the shade, most proceeded to drink in the beauty of more than 200 historic roses at their spring best. The visitors were amazed at the beauty of the garden and spent some enjoyable hours smelling the delicious perfumes and taking in the ambience of the valley. Many could not believe the garden has only been established over the past seven years.
Heritage roses in this garden have been sourced from local gardens including the late Anne Hewitt’s garden at Mt Mee (Leonie’s Grandmother), as well as the Townsend Garden at Ocean View, planted by the late Janie Townsend, and from many areas of Australia where they were brought by homesick early settlers from Britian and Europe.
