WITH THE SUNSHINE COAST CHORALE
The annual SCO Mt Mee “AFTERNOON AT THE PROMS” takes place in the Hall on Sunday 28th November at 2pm.
The orchestral program will begin very seriously. It will include Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” marches, excerpts from “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, the mandatory Eric Coates offering, in this instance the “London Suite”, and music by Sibelius. The veneer of sombre respectability will crack though, and the afternoon will wind up with the usual chaotic confection of Prom music, civil disobedience by the orchestra, waving flags and funny hats – all with a strong Christmas influence.
In the interim, the Sunshine Coast Choral Society will contribute some popular opera choruses, including the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Verdi’s opera “Nabucco”. This choir, the “baby” of conductor Adrian King, is an especial favourite of Mt Mee audiences.
The delightful young Elizabeth Smalley is the guest soloist, and she will contribute several items, including Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro” and “Waltz of the Heart” by Ivor Novello. (Very likely more than one heart will be waltzing before she is finished!)
Brisbane born “Liz” began studying violin at the age of five and had her first professional engagement at the age of seven for the launch of the movie “The Secret Garden”. As a student at Brisbane State High, singing began to take priority and after numerous eistedfodds and a stint in the Qld Youth Choir she moved on to the Queensland “Con”, where she is now in her final year of study for her Bachelor of Music (Voice). Described as a lyric coloratura soprano, she has a wide array in her “book”, ranging from early music, Mozart arias, Italian, German and French melodies to contemporary work by Britten and Poulenc.
The internationally experienced and very capable Adrian King has trained and conducted the Orchestra and the Choral Society for several years now, and proceedings will again be in his hands. Adrian needs no introduction to Mt Mee audiences. Nor does percussion and reeds player Cathy Croot of Gannon St, who has just been elected President of the Orchestra! And we thought that she already had her hands full keeping partner and tympanist Les Suart barefooted and in the workshop!
The usual Mt Mee Sunday concert arrangements will apply – to wit the admission charge of $20, the concessions for pensioners and families and the inclusive “Country” home-made afternoon tea. As usual, it is important to book with Kay (5498 2104) or Joyce (5498 2270) and to do it early.
