Here we are again, at the end of another year.  Where did the time go?

It has been an eventful year and like many people I am looking forward to spending time with my family and friends over the Christmas break.  I hope you all have a safe, happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year.  I also hope that everyone made it through last months storms without too many dramas.
GCBF Grants in Time for Christmas
Community groups in Kurwongbah will share in more than $227,000 in funding from the latest round of the Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund.  The Dayboro Bowls Club is set to receive $7,112 to purchase a ride-on mower and other maintenance equipment and the Dayboro Local Ambulance Committee will receive $23,419 to purchase a manikin, television and DVD recorder.  Congratulations to both groups on their hard work and dedication to the Dayboro community.
Other groups in the Kurwongbah electorate to receive funding include: Albany Creek GPS Rugby Union Club; Community Alliance Australia; Eatons Hill Community Kindergarten; Lawnton Kindergarten and Preschool; Petrie State School P&C; Pine Rivers Rowing Club; Queensland Country Women’s Association – Pine Rivers; St Vincent de Paul; Strathpine West State School P&C; and YMCA Camp Warrawee.
Combating Traffic Congestion
The Queensland Government is tackling the urban congestion challenge facing South-East Queensland by developing and implementing a strong package of initiatives.  These initiatives have already included the provision of funding for additional bus, train and active transport services and continued support of transport infrastructure currently under construction.  The Government is focused on implementing a Congestion Management Strategy that includes a variety of initiatives grouped under five key elements of:
Land use and planning – Creating the right development patterns across South-East Queensland to reduce the need for travel through integrated corridor planning of major arterials and provide support for transit oriented developments.
Pricing and travel demand on management – Creating incentives for more efficient use of the existing network through travel demand management measures to encourage less private vehicle travel, particularly during peak congestion periods.
Travel options – Creating a public transport and active transport network that has greater accessibility, frequency and reliability through more cycling facilities and more public transport, including buses, rail and ferry.
Efficiency – Maximising the efficiency of existing infrastructure investments through active traffic management and advanced incident management including the development of intelligent transport systems and quick road clearance.
Capacity – Building on additional infrastructure investment through major and arterial road construction projects, new tunnels and more public transport infrastructure, including rail upgrades and extensions, busways, bus priority measures and station upgrades.
We want to hear your views on dealing with congestion through these five core elements.  For more information visit www.transport.qld.gov.au or to make a comment email congestion@transport.qld.gov.au or kurwongbah@parliament.qld.gov.au.
Experience Volunteering
The Queensland Government has launched the Experience Volunteering campaign which aims to encourage young people to become volunteers.  This campaign coincided with International Volunteer Day on Friday 5th December 2008.  There are a lot of ways you can experience volunteering.  You can help out at festivals, join an environmental group or reach out online with web-based volunteering.  Become a volunteer and reach out, make a difference, develop new skills, make new friends or get job-ready.  For more information you can visit www.getinvloved.qld.gov.au or www.volqld.org.au.
Schools out for Year 12
Congratulations to all the Year 12 students who have now completed their formal study.  As you move on to new challenges and adventures, I wish you all the very best for your future.
I was pleased to present a pack for each Year 12 student at Bray Park State High School, Genesis Christian College and Mt Maria College containing some brochures and information which the students will hopefully find useful as they move into the next phase of their lives.  But if you have any questions or queries regarding State matters, please do not hesitate to contact my office – we are only too willing to help.
Wishing you a merry Christmas,

Linda.
