Feb2013_A LIONS TALE
Dayboro Lions have been busy underpinning many of the community’s social and family events, despite the series of absences of their President (Me) and several other members on travels.
I am absolutely delighted at the response by the club members to ensure all continues. This is teamwork at its best. All of our multi-talented members, and additional volunteers (including comrades from APEX) stepped up to fill roles, and we had a great two months.
The show must go on – the November Monthly Community Movies went ahead, despite a hideous storm that evening.
Next movie: “WRECK IT, RALPH” (G) on 16th Feb in the Community Hall. Starts at 7:00pm.
It is a popular animated film, suitable for children. There has been rumours that the Lion Community Cinema will only run for a few more months, as 35mm film will no longer be available. I book our movies directly with the main distributors (Fox, Universal, Roadshow etc) and I am told directly from these that the timescale for the phase-out of 35mm film is years, not months. We hope that by this time, equipment to show digital media would have reduced in price from $50k++, and permissions and rules on minimum show times etc will recognise the small secondary cinema market.

WHAT WE HAVE BEEN UP TO:
The Lions’ owned PA speaker system has been provided several times: for the Lions park opening; Heritage trail opening; carols; Remembrance Day; CWA event; and Dairy Farmers’ Christmas event. It has an additional operator – the competent and soon new member, Danny Nugent. Unfortunately, the quality is sounding somewhat sad lately, and a major repair or replacement may be necessary. It has proved its worth over the years.
Lion Dave has applied for, and been granted $1000+ for operating equipment, including a First Aid Kit, 2-way handhelds, and more vinyl for our signwriting services to the community.
Sponsorship of $1000 was given to Dayboro School end-of-year booklet given to all school leavers. This is a splendid PR exercise to ensure future generations continue to engage the spirit of community help. It was a pleasure to present these booklets to the enthusiastic and very polite young students on their delightful graduation evening.
The sum of $700 was given to the Dayboro Combined Churches "Community Chest", a fund to provide the needy with food and support, to ensure that managed over the Christmas period.
We had 56kg of lollies purchased for $300 by our new Lion Patsy, in a splendid commercial deal, to be distributed to appreciative kids by the chubby fellow in red as he toured the Dayboro streets in the community Police car. These were packaged up at the Dayboro Lions “year’s wrap-up” business meeting which deteriorated (elevated??) to a social evening.
In another collaborative group effort, the Progress Association’s Swaggies Christmas was supported by the donation of all the drinks, and the Lions to sell them. The monies from this went towards the Christmas hampers for the needy, operated by the combined churches.
A grant of $100 was given to the Dayboro Tennis Club’s Christmas charity drive.
Lions were successful at selling Lions Christmas Cakes, with collaborative support from Dayboro businesses.
More support from George Hartnett Funerals via Lion Patsy, provided the community with Christmas wrapped children’s gifts for the needy, and a splendid hamper which was given to a lucky winner at the respite lunch.
Dayboro Lions again supported the real bucolic event, "Carols Under the Big Tree" at Samsonvale, on 16th December. Over 300 attended this uncharacteristically warm and dry evening, and we are proud to be able to ensure that this traditional event continues at Ian Kent’s Farm as it has for decades.
This year, we added to our community support by presenting the supporting the catering and financing a Christmas meal for the Dayboro Respite and its volunteers. This was a collaborative effort, with Joe Calam as the volunteer cook and bottlewasher. Many thanks to (“greasy”) Joe.
The Alarm Necklace provision and support continues to nearly thirty sponsored local needy recipients.
The Lions zero-cost mobility loan scheme managed by Lion John out of Hire Connection has been busy with many loans, and equipment has been augmented by the kind donation of a hospital bed via Steve from Dayboro Hardware. Many thanks to Lions Tommy for his efforts towards this.
The collaboration with the highly successful and socially necessary Dayboro Mens’ Shed, which was formed under the auspices of Dayboro Lions, has had payback in the form of the crafting of an excellent ‘gallows’ movie poster advertising sign hanger, in the centre of the town.
Our membership fees have, as part of Lions International, contributed towards national and worldwide issues: Fires, measles eradication, eyesight restoration, catastrophes etc etc.
Our next business meeting will be in the Council Building on 13th Feb. New members welcome.
