Aug2014_A LIONS TALE

NEXT MOVIE:  “Muppets – Most Wanted” on Saturday 16th August.
New committee:  The Lions had a most successful changeover evening, with the new executive being inducted to their positions:  President: Dave Quinn.  Vice President:  Ian Flinders.  Secretary: Dugi Wilson.  Treasurer:  Stefan Hansen.

The camaraderie of Lions and guests was evident, and the list of our year’s activities and successes read out by Lion Dave was impressive.  Lion Marj retired as treasurer after 16 years, and was presented with an award and many thanks for keeping the books with such diligence over the years.  Ross the movie projectionist was invited as a guest to receive a certificate of appreciation, during which he gave a good insight into the history of the movies in Dayboro.
Grant success:  The Lion with the silver pen (President Dave Quinn) has again scored an excellent win for the community.  We have been awarded a grant of $20,000 towards fitness equipment around our town here through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.  Together with the substantial contributions from Lions, the Progress Association and a private donation from the Goldstiver family, we should look forward to some good installations, and a fit and well-toned community!  More later.
Movie News:  Popcorn sales were fast and furious on this chilly evening of the July screening of “The Lego Movie”, which again attracted a smaller audience, and surprisingly there were as many adults as kids.  All ‘family’ movies such as this have a humorous adult content, as does the next movie: Disney’s “Muppets – Most Wanted”, to be screened on Sat 16th August.  We are always open to suggestions as to which movies you would like to see, so if you have an opinion, please email to Dayboro.lions@gmail.com     The local ABC radio community liaison officer came along that evening and interviewed a few of us – the broadcast can be heard on 612 ABCradio on Friday morning 15th August  – some time during the Spencer Howson show, 6:00 am.
There was an unexpected hiatus in the movie due to a power outage, which was quickly sorted and back on track thanks to our volunteer  techo/operator in the control box,  Brent–  the young guy who works in IGA.  Seems the cause was that one of Dayboro’s  maggots had turned off the main hall power switch outside.  But hopefully the recordings of newly installed security cameras on the police station may be able to identify the culprit(s).
Awards to the talented young:  The Dayboro Show was a splendid event this year.  We went along to see the spectacular display of artwork there with the purpose of choosing a picture to adorn the cover of the 2015 Dayboro Directory.  After viewing many fine efforts, the Kookaburra  by Eleni Dowling was chosen, I had the pleasure of presenting Eleni with her trophy at the Dayboro SS school assembly, and also presenting Ashley Staude of Mt Samson SS with her runner-up trophy at this school.  Looks like there will be fierce competition at next year’s Show to achieve this honour.
The Lions Community free monthly community presentation on  27th August will be Andy Henderson.  He started in the police as a Cadet/Trainee straight from school & retired as Deputy Commissioner.  He will enlighten us as to the many facets of the job, and no doubt there will be some interesting stories emerge.  All are welcome to this, starting at 7pm at the Uniting Church Hall opposite the butcher.  An optional meal can be ordered on the night,  cost $12.  BYO. Coffee & tea is provided.
Amongst the more notable agenda items at our business meeting was the donation of $500 to sponsor four disabled young people at the Scouts Agoonoree – a week’s camp down at the Scouts park in Samford.  This is supported by voluntary efforts of Scouts and leaders (who actually pay for themselves to be there) to ensure that the 70+ disadvantaged have an adventurous week.  We are proud to support these efforts.
The Dayboro Lions donate to causes outside the immediate community, and one such is the QIMR medical research institute at Brisbane Hospital.  http://www.qimrberghofer.edu.au/   There are regular public information lectures there and some of our Lions visited to hear from leading world researchers of the cutting edge developments on the understanding of cancer.  Riveting  stuff.
If you would like to consider joining the Lions, to help ensure the community has excellent support, then come along to a meeting on 1st (business meeting) or 3rd Wednesday (open community talk) of the month, and see if this easy-going happy group is for you.

….More Next Month
       Lion Ian.
