DAYBORO DAY – 24th Year!
This huge event draws visitors from far and wide, including interstate, and not only contributes to the growing interest in our area as a tourist destination, but is the final major activity of the annual Pine Rivers Festival. This mainly free event, which I am pleased to say continues to be supported by Council, also provides an opportunity for local community groups to raise valuable funds to support their activities.
With volunteerism struggling to provide adequate resources for so many of our important community activities, can I ask all readers, who may not be otherwise engaged in Dayboro Day festivities, to dig deep into their time and energy to assist the small band of people who do most of the organizing for what is an outstanding community event. ROADWORKS
Council contractors have recently completed installation of a number of kerb ramps in Williams Street requested by Council’s Traffic and Pedestrian safety officers. These six ramps will assist those with mobility scooters and prams to navigate our street.
ROADSIDE LITTERING – ILLEGAL DUMPING
Despite increasing public awareness on the issue and the efforts of hundreds of residents taking part in the Clean Up Australia programme each year, roadside littering and illegal dumping nevertheless remains a blight on our community and significant clean-up costs funded by our ratepayers. Councils have been given considerable powers in managing these issues and applying what are now significant fines for such things as general littering, throwing litter from a vehicle, and illegal dumping. Of particular note is the fact that loads in trailers and on the back of trucks and utes must be adequately contained as litter that falls from these vehicles can attract on the spot fines of $227. I am also pleased to report that in the last couple of months council officers have been able to identify and issue fines of up to $1821 for a number of cases of illegal dumping reported by alert residents.
AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS BLOOD SERVICE
I recently paid a visit to the Red Cross Blood Service at Strathpine to receive, along with a number of my Council colleagues, an award recognizing the contribution by Councillors and Council staff towards the number of blood donations made in 2014. The highest number of donations (being 310) made by a large organization would, according to Red Cross help save some 936 lives. I am aware that the blood bank is in urgent need of donations of all blood types so if you can assist please call 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood.com.au for more information.
DID YOU KNOW
That between 1 January and 31 March there were 247,515 views on the Council road condition report on its website. Most of these would’ve occurred in the heavy rain periods during which more than 91 road closures were reported.
