TICKS AND BITS
The paralysis tick is a constant presence in our community. Even though their numbers are greatly reduced in the colder months, people get caught out every year when their animals come down with paralysis “out of season”
This recently happened and we had a spate of pets and a young miniature horse with tick paralysis. A bit of wet weather and a couple of warmish days is all it needs and as we all know this can and does happen in the dead of winter.
Therefore prevention and vigilance is a year round task for all of us who love our animals.
We are now coming up to what is generally called “tick season” so the old adage of an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure definitely rings true- as the cure is not always possible, and treatment is costly.
It is not only the dogs and cats that suffer- every year we get birds, calves, foals, lambs, kids and crias brought into the surgery
So keeping animals tick free is necessary across all species.
Spring calves are particularly susceptible and “clean” paddocks are best used for these young animals.
Contact your local vet to get advice vaccination programs and tick prevention both in your small and large animals.
Best wishes for a healthy season from all at Dayboro Vets
PS- Don’t forget the Ekka is coming up and we have some locals exhibiting. So come in and support them and say hi to us. Once again we are the vets looking after the cattle/sheep/goats etc. at the show!!
