Stay Hydrated -The Importance of electrolytes
Electrolytes are ionic solutions (salts) existing in nature in the form of minerals, responsible for keeping the body properly hydrated so muscles and nerves can function properly.
The body is composed mostly of water, it is important that we take in these minerals. When we are well hydrated we are able to release toxic internal wastes such as harmful chemicals, urea and ammonia. The essential electrolytes found in the human body are sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, chloride, calcium and phosphates.
When we expend sweat, we lose these vital minerals, so we need to replenish, not only with water but with minerals. If we combine intake of fluids with electrolytes, we will actually hydrate quicker, as water follows electrolytes.
Electrolytes are found in most fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, dark leafy greens and bananas.
