The days are getting longer again and the bees are going to be getting busy soon. With spring around the corner it is time to give your citrus trees a preventative spray of copper oxychloride. (With all the rain we have had recently fungal diseases could be a problem this year) The copper spray should be applied before flowers open.
Slugs are starting to appear – was going to say rubbing their hands together – watching the strawberries begin to form. Slug traps can be made from a glass bottle containing a small amount of beer. The bottle needs to be partly buried in the soil so that the mouth of the bottle is level with the surrounding soil. This is a much more pet friendly solution than slug pellets.
Carrots can be sown now, also you can start propagating your tomatoes-hopefully to have some seedlings ready to go in at the start of spring. If you planted any potatoes a month or so ago you should be seeing some growth by now. Tubers grow on the stem of the plant so for more potatoes soil should be heaped around the stem as the plant grows.
