SMOKE DETECTORS

We all know of the benefits of having smoke detectors.
Do we all remember to change the batteries on our smoke detectors – every 12 months?
Do we all remember to check that each smoke detector is working by pushing that ‘test’ button – monthly?
Do we vacuum over and around the outer casing regularly –say weekly?  Dust and debris will impede its effectiveness!
Many homes are fitted with the older style smoke detector, the ionisation style.  The ‘new kid on the block’ is a photo-electric type of unit.  Both of these types of smoke detectors meet the necessary Government guidelines – but they do wear out over time.  Replace yours before the warranty expires.
These potentially life savings devices are designed to wake you so that you have time to get yourself and your family out of the building safely . . . Then ring 000.
Having said that, how many people have been annoyed by their smoke detectors going off when their toast has been ‘overdone’ or when cooking a sizzling steak etc?
Placement of smoke detectors is important in more ways than one.  Correct placement could minimise false alarms but, and more importantly, will see that the device activates when it needs to.  If you have the smoke detector incorrectly positioned it may not emit its ear-splitting warning in time for safe evacuation when there is a fire.  Remember that the smoke rises to the ceiling – hence the “Get down low and go, go, go” that youngsters are taught to do in case of fire.
Make sure that you have it right!  Book a Safehome visit. It’s FREE.  Phone 1300 369 003 to invite a firefighter into your home! These firefighters all want a safer community and prevention is the key – better than attending a fire, particularly one involving loss of life!  More info at:  www.fire.qld.gov.au  (Click on the Community Safety tab)
