Skin cancer survivors to hear from international experts on Nov 24 2013
Queenslanders affected by skin cancer will hear from international experts at a free forum this November, part of the first-ever global skin cancer conference hosted by Cancer Council Queensland.
In partnership with Melanoma Patients Australia, the consumer forum will be hosted on Sunday 24 November, part of the Global Controversies and Advances in Skin Cancer conference at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Queenslanders affected by any type of skin cancer, including family and carers, are invited to hear about the latest in skin cancer research, prevention, treatment and support.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the free forum was a rare opportunity to hear from global experts in skin cancer research and treatment.
“Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world,” Ms Clift said.
“The opportunity for locals impacted by skin cancer to ask questions of international experts, and hear their presentations first hand – is rare and exciting.
“I encourage Queenslanders affected by skin cancer, and their family and carers, to register for this free event to meet and connect with others impacted by cancer.
“Attendees will also hear from people with a personal experience of skin cancer – including patients, carers and cancer specialists.
“This event is important for Queensland. In our state alone, around 136,000 skin cancers are diagnosed every year.
“It’s fitting that Brisbane, a world leader in skin cancer prevention, early detection and research, would host a global conference and consumer forum of this scale.
“We look forward to welcoming national and international speakers and delegates to hear the very latest from world-class leaders in skin cancer.”
Melanoma Patients Australia CEO Tilly Ryan said a melanoma diagnosis need not be a lonely or confusing journey.
“Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer and the forum provides valuable insights to melanoma patients, their family and friends, to assist them in their melanoma treatment and management,” Ms Ryan said.
“Of equal importance, is the opportunity for melanoma patients to connect and come together to access free support services and programs.”
Those interested can download the consumer forum program and flyer online at www.gc-sc.org/consumerforum . The event is free, however registration is required and spaces are limited.
