REPORT ON DAYBORO SHOW 2008
It is now over a week since the 53rd Dayboro Show was held. Where has this week gone? What a weekend we had.
To see pictures of Dayboro Show 2008 (all in colour) – go to the PHOTO GALLERY.
Our sincere thanks to all the people who came as stewards, kitchen workers, bar workers, parking attendants, cleaning up crew, judges, stall holders, exhibitors, competitors and of course our Sponsors, some of whom are also included in the above list, as well as all the patrons. Without the support of you all we would not have been able to have put together such a wonderful show.
Attendance was up over all three days – was it due to the end of holidays, the very reasonable gate entry fees, the weather, the extra publicity/advertising (some of which we didn’t even know had happened), or a combination of everything.
Our Show Challenges in the pavilion sections were mixed. In cookery section we received 21 chocolate cakes. The winning cake was made by Pamela Stokes of Mt Pleasant. In craft section it was the black and white cards. Did you see them? It is surprising how many people we ‘sent back’ to have a look at them. There were heaps and heaps of them – I don’t know how so many different ideas can come from ‘black and white’. This section was won by Helen Rhue of Ocean View. Photography section was won by Karri Lake of Kobble Creek for her photo of Man and Best Friend, and the Pot of Mixed Plants was won by Diane Bell of Samsonvale.
These four ladies all received a trophy – Pamela, Karri and Helen all received a beautiful hand made jewellery box inlaid with a Show Society Badge made by Mr Burn Bell and Diane received a woollen saddle pad/blanket, as she already has lots and lots of Burn’s beautiful timber items in her house. Congratulations to all these ladies and to everyone who entered. Here’s hoping that next year will be bigger and better.
The entertainment this year was really, really good, not that I saw any of it – well that’s a bit of a fib – I saw one snake and 1/2 a lizard over the two days . . and the fireworks. Mrs Weston didn’t even see the fireworks – but I told her that they were very good (as always). The feedback we have received has been very positive.
The gentleman who came to grief on the mower is fine – rather battered and bruised, but no major damage thank goodness.
The Queensland Championship woodchopping event was all over and done with in 36 seconds. What a tremendous effort! For those of us who are pre-metric, Kerry Head cut through 2 x 11" blocks – one by cutting through his legs, and one by standing beside the block.
It will take quite a few weeks to work out the final figures for the show, but at this stage we are hoping to have made a profit – it won’t be huge by any means, but it will be better than being in the red!
I did ask the Showmen’s Guild why we didn’t have any rides for the bigger people apart from the Dodgem cars, and the answer given was that it was too wet on the ground to set them up. There was a paratrooper and a big ferris wheel on trucks.
Now that the Guild has moved out I can see what they were talking about – it will take us a while to get the ground back up to scratch – especially if the rain keeps coming in dribs and drabs like it has been.
A visitor to our Show, a past president of a Show Society in New Zealand, was really impressed with what we had on offer, and has taken a copy of most of the Pavilion Section schedules. In due course, we will receive a copy of their schedule which will be very interesting and we might be able to use some of their ideas too.
We wish our Miss Showgirl entrant Sarah Hill, all the best as she starts to get ready for the judging for the Queensland title which starts on 6th August. Our thanks too, to Slade Walker for his support in allowing Sarah to take time off work to compete – this is a big ask of an employer in these days and times, and we do appreciate it, and we all have our fingers crossed for Sarah. Go girl!!!
By the time this gets to you it will be only 11½ months till the 54th Dayboro Show – put it in your diaries for next year – 10th, 11th, 12th July 2009.
