Ocean View Estates wins at Queensland Wine Awards!
Ocean View Estates was named Queensland Cellar Door of the Year at the 2012 Queensland Wine Awards on 6 September, and also boasted the highest-ranking Rose of the awards – the 2012 Reflections which won a silver medal.
Kate and Thomas Honnef were also awarded a silver medal for their flagship wine, the Viognier, while their 2012 Oaked Chardonnay won a bronze medal.
These wines are all Estate-grown and made on-site by Thomas and his team, making Ocean View Estates Australia’s closest fully operational vineyard and winery to a CBD.
While you can judge the wines for yourself at the Estate’s award-winning cellar door any Wednesday to Sunday from 10am, you also have a chance to learn a little – or a lot – more with two up-coming events.
A Walk a While with the Winemaker tour on 28 October will let you get in amongst the vines with Winemaker Thomas Honnef, sampling wines in the vineyards where they were grown and in the winery.  Guests will sample six wines, each with matching foods, for $50.
“I really enjoy leading these tours – we have a lot of fun, it’s very interactive and it’s a great way to get a bit more of an understanding about our different wines and what makes them the way they are,” Thomas said.
“And our vines are at their best during October and November, so it’s well worth a visit.”
If you want to learn more, the Estate is also offering a 2-day Evaluate Wines Certificate Course on Sunday 28 and Monday 29 October which will cover wine regions, the wine making process, how to taste wine, and assessing quality.  All meals are included over the two days, which will culminate with drinks and canapés so participants can practice what they’ve learnt.  This is a TAFE certificate course and bookings and payments due by 12 October. Cost is $180 per person.
Special deals for locals continue this month with $5 home-made coffee and cake specials on Thursday and Friday mornings, and the new Laid-back-locals menu on Thursday and Friday nights which has been attracting plenty of new visitors.
“All our laid-back-locals meals are under $20 and we are offering free dessert with children’s meals,” Kate said.
“Just remember to give me a call by 6pm to let me know that you’re coming in for dinner.”
While visitors enjoy the stunning vineyard views, Thomas will be busy in the winery this month, bottling the 2012 reds, which will soon be ready for release.
The latest release from the winery is the 2012 Summer Ruby which is a light, unwooded, sweeter-style red that is served chilled.  It is a perfect partner for Kate’s latest recipe of the month, which is Char Grilled Fish with White Bean Salad and Olive Salsa.  Available now from the Ocean View Estates website.
