Nov2013_Qld BMX State Championships
– Corrie Schuhmann 2nd
Corrie Schuhmann joined the Pine Rivers BMX club at Brendale when he was 12 but it was a few years before he started serious racing. He now regularly competes at club open days at different tracks around South East Queensland.
About 4 years ago he started competing in the South East Qld Titles, then the Qld Titles and this year for the first time in the Australian Titles. Last year in May he was due to compete in The Australian Titles being held in Mt Gambier South Australia but broke his wrist and finger in training 2 weeks before the competition. He got back into training and went to Cairns for the Queensland Titles last September and after making it through to the semi-finals just missed out on getting into the finals by 200th of a second.
This year in May he got to compete at the Australian Titles at Chandler in Brisbane and placed 35th out of 81 riders. However just before the South East Queensland Titles at Toowoomba in June this year he again had an accident while at a club race night and broke his finger and twisted his ankle. Due to where the break was they put his whole arm in a cast so he again was unable to compete. Just after this Corrie joined the GHP Ride for Life Racing Team. Then the cast came off and he was back into training. In the September school holidays it was time for the Qld State Titles this time being held at Nerang down the coast. It was very exciting when Corrie made it into the final and then brought it home to place 2nd in the 17 year old men’s final. He was very happy to stand on the podium and receive his Q2 Plate and trophy.
BMX is now an Olympic sport. It was first included at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 where Jared Graves placed 6th for Australia then again last year in London with Australia’s Sam Willoughby placing 2nd and winning silver for Australia.
