Nov2013_ Clock ticking on Australia Day Awards

World record holder, marathon swimmer and Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Young Sportsperson for 2013, Trent Grimsey, is encouraging residents to nominate a local hero for the Australia Day Awards before the November 15 deadline.

“It was an honour to be nominated.  When you do something you’re passionate about you don’t really think about the recognition that comes with it, you just focus on the task at hand,” Trent said.
“To be recognised for your hard work feels great.”
Trent was nominated by his aunt, Susan Blank, after smashing the record for swimming the English Channel in six hours and 55 minutes.
“I wanted to let Trent know that everyone in Australia was proud of his record breaking feat,” Susan said.
Since winning the award, Trent has become a Swimfit teacher at Redcliffe’s Suttons Beach.
Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said the awards were the ideal way of acknowledging the tireless efforts of the region’s quiet achievers and unsung heroes.
“We’re looking for nominees who have displayed compassion, provided valuable voluntary service, or who have been leaders in their field over the past 12 months,” Mayor Sutherland said.
“Previous winners have been community group leaders, dedicated volunteers, environmentalists, high achieving sports people and musicians.
These are the people who are the backbone of our community and they should be honoured for their contribution.”
For more information and to lodge your nomination online visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/ausawards  or pick up a hard copy from your local library or customer service centre.
Nominations close November 15, 2013.
