May2014_OLD MILL ANIMAL HOSPITAL PET OF THE MONTH

Boxers are the clowns of the dog world and Tess is no exception.  With her striking white coat, she bounds into the clinic happily, regardless what is in store for her visit!
Tess came to us with a small lump on her chest that seemed to be growing quite rapidly.  Tests showed lots of inflammatory cells, but the concern was that these cells were hiding a more sinister story.  The lump continued to grow, getting redder and starting to ooze, so even though continued testing showed no specific signs of cancer, it was decided the whole lump should be removed.
Tess underwent a long operation where Dr Warren skilfully removed the lump, and stitched her chest back together without needing a skin graft.  Due to the position of the wound, Tess had to wear a t-shirt taken from a staff locker (sorry Joe!) over the top of her bandages, to give her extra padding in her deep Boxer chest.
Her wound area is healing unbelievably quickly and the full histopathology results from the laboratory show that the lump was hiding Mast Cells – a potentially aggressive cancer but luckily for Tess, it has been completely removed.
Tess can now go back to leading a normal Boxer life, bouncing around with her Boxer fur-sister, Lizzee.
