May2014_AUSTRALIAN / UK MEMORIAL

This memorial was unveiled on 11 November 2003 and the ceremony was attended by our then Prime Minister, John Howard, with 25 Australian veterans included in the 3,000 people present.
Located in the southern corner of Hyde Park, London, the memorial is dedicated to the 102,000 Australians who died in the First and Second World Wars.

This curved wall is made of grey-green granite sourced from Jerramungup in Western Australia and contains the names of 47 battles in which Australia was involved, as well as the names of 23,844 towns in which the soldiers were born.
Thanks go to Dugi Wilson for sending photos taken of an Australian War Memorial in London. (See the photos in our printed edition or the digital download edition, for May 2014 on page 47)

As Dugi said that it shows the global reach of these wars and the breadth of the communities involved.
What really brings it so close to home is that our town, Dayboro, is listed  in the towns under the Ruhr battle.  (Right near the top of the first “R”)
If you do happen to find yourself in London, do take the time to visit Hyde Park and this memorial.  There is also a New Zealand War Memorial, situated diagonally opposite the Australian War Memorial.  This was unveiled in 2006.
