March2104_POULTRY MATTERS – NPPC
Do you keep poultry?
Are you a poultry fancier or enthusiast?
Whether you keep a couple of hens in the backyard for eggs or enjoy breeding and exhibiting birds, there’s always more to learn from people who know how.
The North Pine Poultry Club (NPPC) is a forum for beginners, breeders and exhibitors of heritage breeds of poultry. Its main aim is to promote heritage breeds of poultry. The focal point of interest for January’s meeting were guest speakers, Tom Trim and Peter Gamble, breeders of Croad Langshans. Both Tom and Peter have spent 11 years preserving and developing this breed, now rare in Australia, UK, Europe and the USA.
Croad Langshans are a majestic breed, weighing in between 4.1 kg for males and 3.2 kg for females. In Australia, this large, heavy, soft feather breed is either brightly coloured blue or black with a green sheen. Tom describes the Croads as an excellent utility bird with docile and quiet characteristics. Hens can lay, on average, 200 eggs per year and meat is white skinned and excellent. The Croad Langshan is a stately bird of beauty and is best housed in runs with 900 mm high fencing. Once settled this breed adjust well to other poultry breeds. Both Tom and Peter are proud of their research and development in maintaining continuity of this breed.
