June2014_Young Achiever 2014, Johnathon Thomson
Johnathon started his volunteering by joining the Samsonvale Rural Fire Brigade when we turned 16. After a year we also took on the Treasurers role and during this time decided to become a youth helper in the Dayboro Scouts.
Johnathon has been heavily involved in the Scouts since he was 17 years of ago (now 21). He was too young to become a leader until he turned 18, therefore joined the scouting section as a Youth Helper. The Scouts loved his youth and enthusiasm. At 18 he signed up as a leader, but was only in his role as an assistant leader for 6 months when he became a Scout leader, following the exit of the existing leader. Now Johnathon’s team consists of 3 assistant leaders, one parent helper and one Adult helper. This Leadership Training involves, amongst other things, obtaining a Certificate in Front Line Management.
Johnathon has participated in district leadership courses, teaching Scouts from Albany Creek to Caboolture, also giving up 2 weeks paid leave to work as a volunteer Assistant Troup Leader at the 23rd Australian Jamboree. This involved working with Scouts from around Australian as well as from Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
He is always willing to “go the extra mile” to assist the members of the Scout group – he is not only their Leader, but also a mentor, supervisor, guide, and willingly gives advice to enable members to make the right choices as a Scout and in their everyday life. His natural leadership skills, coupled with still being a ‘kid a heart’ helps the youngsters he leads better relate to him, and adding the element for fun to his endeavours.
He surely has developed a strong sense of community spirit.
He is currently the Rovers Crew Leader, working with Beverley Seymour (section Advisor) to get this section up and running in Dayboro. Rovers is for 18 to 26 year olds, and their motto is “To Give Service”.
Johnathon’s enthuasiasm and willingness inspires those around him, regardless of their age.
Congratulations. Know that you contribution is noticed and appreciated by the youth that you work with and their parents too, not just your own family.
