June2014_RESIDENTS OF THE YEAR 2014 , Sue and Ian Flinders

Ian and Sue put in a lot of hard work for the benefit of their community – Dayboro and Samsonvale areas specifically.
Sue and Ian came to live at Postmans track 26 years ago – with their 2 sons, Matthew and Ben – immediately becoming involved in their education and Mt Samson State School’s 125th anniversary event.  When their sons joined Scouts, so did Ian and Sue.  Inaugural leaders of Joey Scouts for 2 years, Cub leaders for 5 years and Scout leaders for 2 years, they also assisted with the building of the Dayboro Scout Den.
They were involved with the Samford Valley Wildlife Preservation Society, including the inaugural presidency, and have been assisting with the Samsonvale Carols under the big tree for the last 20 years – more recently bringing it into the Dayboro Lions Club’s regular projects.
Ian joined the Dayboro Lions Club and was eventually joined by Sue – their executive positions have included Secretary, President and Vice President.  The Lions’ P.A. System was under Ian’s direction and is much in demand for local events.
Sue and Ian were instrumental in starting up the alarm necklaces scheme.  These alarm necklaces are supplied to those who need them, and this is followed up with visits to maintain these necklaces.  Another key involvement is in starting the Lions Disability Loan Equipment Scheme and the sourcing of the equipment.
The Dayboro Lions Movie Night has benefited from Ian and Sue’s involvement for the last 5 years.  Now, as the 35mm film is virtually ‘extinct’, Ian’s interest in gadgetry has been called upon to determine the future direction for the monthly movies.  To this end a new system has been implemented to keep the monthly movie tradition going.
Sue, who is also a JP, has taken over the running of the canteen at the movies and also the management of the Dayboro Business Directory.  As well as manning the Lions stall on Dayboro Day (for which they are responsible for purchasing the food and drinks), both Ian and Sue can normally be found helping with set-up and clean-up of the big event . . . .  with Ian wearing his ‘best’ hat.
Congratulations to this great husband and wife team.
