June2014_DAYBORO SHOW 2014 on July 5th and 6th
The 59th Annual Show is only weeks away now – where has the past twelve months gone. Planning has been underway all year, but more so in the past couple of months. We are hoping to have many new things for people to look at and participate in hopefully as well as the usual show things of ring events, woodchopping, our wonderful pavilion exhibits, dog shows, team penning etc.
Our Facebook page is being kept up to date thanks to one of our Stewards who is doing a wonderful job – so much more technologically inclined than I am. As things are confirmed they are up there, and those of you on Facebook please check out our page and like and share –I’ve just learnt how to do this, so if I can do it, so can you.
The pavilion schedules are all on our webpage –dayboroshowsociety.com – and we have had a few changes to the Horse events program, which has caused a delay with this, but hopefully it will be up and out there by the time this hits the streets.
Our entertainment is still being finalised, our new co-ordinator is astounded at the ‘cost’ of the free entertainment that we provide for our patrons.
We have obtained the services of ‘Toot-toot’ a trackless train that will be transporting people from the parking areas to closer to the main show area and to the dog show on the footy field on Saturday.
Most importantly, the dates of the Show are Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July. Gates open to the public at 9am. We are having our fireworks on Saturday night at 6pm approximately, so please mark this on your calendars, diaries, phones etc so that you remember to lock up your animals that might not like the noise – remembering that if the wind is right the noise travels a long distance. On a clear night we can hear the noise at Kobble – 6kms from the showgrounds, and I would imagine that it would travel a fair distance in the other directions – the noise bounces off the mountains and echoes around the district.
Helpers are always required at Show time, so if you have a couple of hours free to help in the kitchen and dining room, with Big Kev’s Kitchen on Saturday on the footy field, helping to tidy up the woodchop area after a chop, stewarding in the horse ring (conditions apply), helping to set up in the week prior etc we would love to hear from you.
As many of you are aware, our renovations to the old Vet Building are coming along albeit slowly. We have been having a few problems with the bureaucracy and this is now going to take us a bit longer to get the building to comply with all the current requirements, so we probably won’t be using it this year, which is a real disappointment after the many, many hours of volunteer labour and tradespeoples’ hours that have gone into getting it ready for this year’s show, however, them’s the breaks, and we have taken a deep breath and ‘sucked it up Susan’ and will keep working hard to give this ‘old girl’ of Dayboro the love and care that she deserves. The War Memorial Association will have held their display in the building – it is safe, just not compliant yet.
We have been receiving many compliments on how great the grounds look at the moment – this is due to our current caretaker, Ian, who is never off the mower. Previously Chris had done all the mowing and slashing for over 25 years, in between his paid employment and the grounds were always lovely for our major big events and as often as time permitted in between. We have been very fortunate that Ian has been able to do this work for us. The trees that Burn and John planted have mostly taken and are growing beautifully to provide shade in the future.
Our camp area has been fairly full for most of this summer season. The income that we receive from the campers is vital to help with the on-going maintenance expenses of the grounds. Having the campers on the grounds also helps the town. People buy their fuel, groceries, bread, meat etc, maybe have lunch/dinner at the eateries, use the post office, doctor, physio and all the other services that are available in our town.
We are renewing the seating on the grandstands over the next few weeks (so that you don’t get splinters), and hopefully this will all be done in time for the show.
I have waffled on long enough about the goings on, but again will just put out the plea for help – if not for the show, perhaps you could help out a working bee prior. For more information please contact Alison on 3425 1459 or 0407 751 179 before 7.30pm.
Alison Taylor – Secretary.
