Family Stress by Robyn Maggs
It’s time to get dinner, the baby’s crying, kids want homework help or they are fighting and your partner can’t find something or arrives home from work wanting attention. All you want is a place to hide in.
Such scenes are all too familiar to most of us at one point or another within our families.  Add to this health, financial and other stressors and for all its joys, bringing up a family may often seem just too hard.
As a parent the way you manage stress is a model for your children.  Ask yourself:
– How do I manage stress?
– Do I overeat, smoke, yell, and resort to alcohol or aggression when I feel overwhelmed?
– What could I do to strengthen my stress management and coping techniques?
Possible strategies include:
– Talking about it.
– Creating a positive environment
– Developing communication strategies
– Focusing on yourself, taking time-out, and
– Only trying to change one thing at a time
These will be explored in more detail in future editions.  In the meantime if it all continues to feel too much of a struggle, consider seeking help from a health professional who can guide and support you in bringing about the change you want to see.
