June2012_We all leave a mark on this world
I am so very grateful to volunteer for Karuna Hospice Services. Karuna is a home based palliative care service filled with the most wonderful and dedicated staff and volunteers and I love being part of that.
They also have amazing clients and families of which I have had the pleasure to meet quite a few. Palliative Care Helpline is operated through Karuna and if you have any questions about Palliative Care you can give them a call on 1800 772 273. Volunteering for Karuna has inspired this month’s article.
Stress is an inside job! Anger, frustration, joy, delight and all our emotions are feeding back information to us. Letting us know what we need or that we have been fulfilled. I am not minimizing any of these emotions or conditions. What I am saying, is that we do have some choice. We can choose how we embrace or reject what is happening in our lives. Depending on what we choose, we either become more authentic or more disconnected from our true nature. With awareness change is possible if we have the support we need.
I remember my Ayurvedic teacher saying, “Mind is an excellent slave but a very poor master”. I have come to understand this much more over the years. As human beings we have this wonderful mind and it needs to be cared for. If we don’t pay attention then it becomes wild and untamed and this causes us suffering and illness.
An excellent example of the suffering our mind can cause is how we often have expectations and usually they are not realistic. These expectations can be either of ourselves or of others. Just take a moment to think about how your expectations of self or others affects your happiness.
“Peace begins when expectation ends” Sri Chinmoy
I offer some ways of caring for your mind:
As soon as you wake in the morning and before you get up, take some time to think of everything you are grateful for;
Start to notice when you’re having expectations and check in with yourself to see if it is serving you or causing you suffering;
Start to notice when you are judging others and wish them good health and happiness instead (I say in my mind “May you be well, May you be happy);
Be kind to yourself. It is hard to love others if you don’t have love for yourself. You can start with simply liking yourself;
Be involved in some kind of selfless service that will benefit others.
What sort of mark do you want to leave on this world?
May you all be well and may you all be happy
