June2012_OLD MILL VET SURGERY

PET OF THE MONTH
Gizmo the cat came to the Old Mill Vet Surgery with a number of serious symptoms, including vomiting and jaundice.  Owner, Kylie, was desperate to get Gizmo better and after noting all previous efforts from another veterinary clinic, Dr Slade and Dr Annika deemed it necessary to surgically install a feeding tube to feed directly into her stomach.
Extensive in-house testing revealed a rare but serious blood parasite that is carried and distributed by fleas, which was causing severe anaemia, and liver problems. Gizmo required two-hourly feeds through her feeding tube, a blood transfusion, frequent medication, and constant monitoring.
After almost four weeks of this intensive treatment in the Old Mill Vet hospital, Gizmo passed away quietly.
Gizmo’s owner wants to raise awareness of this condition and pleads with owners who may be concerned to seek testing and competent veterinary advice immediately.
Some cats may be fighting the disease without showing symptoms, but the situation can worsen quickly.  Symptoms can include vomiting, lack of appetite and lethargy.  That is why treatment and prevention of fleas is so important, and the issue runs much deeper than simply an itchy pet.
From all at the Old Mill Vet Surgery, we send our condolences to Kylie and the family and thank them for their unwavering support and commitment which is truly admirable.
