July2015_LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
1. Dave Alexander: Donations for fundraising ride for cancer research.
2. Not Segeant X: Ease up, turbo.
3. K Chambers: Kudos for our local trades people.
Dear Editor,
Just before Christmas I advertised in this paper that I will be doing a fundraising ride for cancer research. It’s a two day ride in August over a couple of hundred klms. I had put in the details of how to donate and that it only needs maybe a $5 per person donation from just a few hundred people for me to reach my target to do the ride. As it stands I have only received a handful of donations from good friends in Dayboro who I’ve trained with in the past. It’s pretty disappointing to be honest, when I know of quite a few people in our town who have lost loved ones to cancer. I know it can be tough when you have a lot of great charities all asking for help. Well cancer is right up there as one of our biggest killers in society today.
The website to donate is: www.conquercancer.org.au/goto/davealexander . I must stress that these donations go straight to the research fund, and my name is only at the back end of the website so the donations will be credited in my name for the target I need to reach, (i.e. $2500). I have only about $650 raised so far. So come on Dayboro, please give me a hand with this, do it now while it’s still fresh in your minds.
Thank you, Dave Alexander.
Dear Editor,
Ease up, turbo
With reference to letter to the editor about nuisances not travelling at the maximum speed limit on the Dayboro Rd.
It is bound to incite opinions both ways, but here is something to consider:
1. Leaving Dayboro towards Petrie, there is a 10.2 km stretch of road at 100km/hr max speed limit. The remaining stretches are 60 or 80km/hr.
Of this, 2 km is dual lane, allowing overtaking, leaving only ~8km at issue.
Travelling at 100km/hr takes 4.8 mins to complete this, whereas going at 80km/hr takes 6 minutes. There is 1.2 minutes difference here. Is it worth boiling up blood pressure for this? The negative health effects would eclipse this “waste of your time”. The traffic lights at Youngs Crossing Road and Petrie school could easily take up more than this difference.
Similarly, Mt Samson Rd, the distance over the 100km limit is 13.8km, giving 2 minutes ‘wasted’ time.
2. There are frequent accidents on both of these roads, and there have been several tragic fatalities.
3. The ADR regulation speedometer accuracy is now +zero, -10%. Check yours with a GPS, and it will most likely show a lower speed. This means many cars could be running at 90km/hr, while the speedo reads 100. Couple this with a reasonable driver who keeps the needle below the 100 line.
4. There is not much written about any low-speed laws in Queensland, only “driving without consideration”, but according to the NSW Road Rules you cannot drive so abnormally slowly that you cause an obstruction. An example of driving ‘abnormally slowly’ would be, if you were travelling at a speed of 20 kilometres per hour on a road with a speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour, then you could be causing an obstruction to other drivers if there is no reason for you to drive at that speed on that road.
5. The 100km/hr is a maximum speed LIMIT… not a target.

Dear Editor,
In regards to a recent project I embarked on, I would like to bring attention to some of our local Trades people. Though in some cases I may have gotten cheaper (elsewhere), their experience and knowledge made life so much easier and helped to bring my project in under budget. So a special thanks to: Bowlak Bobcat and Tipper Hire, Wally’s Carpentry, Heathwood Concreting, Stefan Hansson Electrical, Rick Symons Dayboro Plumbing Drainage, Haddon Kitchens, Ron Stewart Dingo Hire, Dayboro Cleaning, Deluxe Door company and Adrian DePauw Hunting Supplies.
Thank you,
K Chambers.
