July2013_OLD MILL VET SURGERY PET OF THE MONTH

It is often the first sign of urinary problems, when a owner notices that a fully toilet-trained pet has urinated in the house all of a sudden.  That’s how the owner of Jazz, a 6 year old Silky Terrier, first found out that there was something wrong with her gorgeous girl.
Jazz was brought to the Old Mill Vet for a urinalysis which showed there was a significant amount of blood in the urine. She was also posturing to urinate, without actually passing anything.
An x-ray confirmed that there were multiple kidney stones in little Jazz, which would probably have been caused by her diet which consisted predominantly of human table scraps.
Jazz had a blood test to check there were no other underlying health issues, and was placed on fluids to support her organs during her operation.  She underwent a general anaesthetic and Dr John surgically removed the kidney stones, which were surprisingly large considering her small stature.  One was about 1.5cm in diameter!
Jazz recovered well from her operation, after a few more hours on IV fluids, and is healing well.  She will be on a much stricter diet, consisting of high quality dog food from now on, to dramatically reduce the chance of any stones recurring.
If you have a pet that urinates inappropriately, it could be for a number of reasons, including behavioural or internal issues.  Make an appointment today at Old Mill Vets on 3425 2222 if any of these symptoms have been noticed in your pet.
