The journey a woman with breast cancer takes is a mammoth one. The emotional roller coaster ride is significant.
Barb remembers… very clearly 31.8.2007. Given the news by a locum doctor, I remember going a little numb. Tears and fears were replaced by appointments and plans. Surgery – results – more surgery – 6 cycles of chemotherapy hospital admission – 30 radiation treatments and Herceptin treatment for another 12 months and then further years of aromatase therapy became my normal routine. Medical and Radiation Oncology appointments will continue until my 10 year graduation due in 2017.
The tears were easy enough to shake but initially the fears of recurrence was a constant companion.
Now I am 8 years along the journey and I am blessed to be a survivor.
In 2015 it is projected that 15,600 women and 145 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
After 5 years the survival rate is projected to be greater than 90%. Something Barb is currently very happy about.
It’s a sad fact that not all who take the breast cancer journey survive, with approximately 1/5th of those diagnosed losing the battle to the disease.
Surviving is worthy of celebration! Not only for the women who make it out the other side but for their family and friends.
Barbara Zimmerlie, breast cancer survivor and co-founding member of Be Uplifted, together with Bronwyn from Wild Whimsy Photography, are hosting a more public celebration to encourage and inspire the almost 15,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed each year. (Cancer australia.gov.au) Members of the public who are breast cancer survivors are invited to join them for one of 2 “Celebrate Breast Cancer Survival” events they will be hosting in the months of November and December.
The celebration will include time to mix and mingle with other survivors at various stages of their journey; A catered celebration luncheon and an “I’m alive and I’m beautiful” photo shoot with morning and afternoon sessions available. The ladies are invited to bring something that speaks to them about their journey to use during the photo shoot. The warm and friendly atmosphere will encourage the sharing of stories and the making of new friends.
Events will be held at Ocean View and Nudgee.
