Feb2015_Dr Michelle’s exotic tastes

Whilst dogs and cats will always be the most common domestic pets, exotic animals like birds, rodents and reptiles are quickly gaining popularity in Australia.  It is lucky then, that Dr Michelle Barton of the Old Mill Animal Hospital, has a special interest in exotics medicine and husbandry.
With every pet comes a swag of responsibilities but some pets require less exercise, grooming, and room to run around. Exotic pets, like guinea pigs and rats, thrive on human company, but need little room to run and have few grooming needs.  Reptiles, like snakes, can be quite aloof with human interactions, have somewhat infrequent feeding needs, and happily live in small enclosures with heat sources and basic foliage.  These pets are suited to almost any family, with the time and budget to set up habitats properly, and maintain healthy diets and good hygiene.  Chickens and birds are surprisingly interactive, have relatively simple diets, and provide happy sounds to the family home.  Even the more controversial ‘long eared Guinea Pigs’ can be treated legally by Dr Michelle.
Along with the unique enrichment they bring to our lives, exotic pets also have some pretty unique health issues.  That’s where Dr Michelle’s extensive 19 years’ experience and credentials come in handy.  With exotic animals requiring some uncommon medications, this experience can mean the difference between ongoing complicated issues, and a quick recovery for your beloved pet.  Our range of exotic services include Bird DNA sexing, wing clipping, Snake sexing, nutrition plans and full dentistry packages for those little hypsodontic teeth (teeth that continually grow).
Dr Michelle’s work with exotics is much sought after, as several clients travel from as far as Logan, Ipswich and the City to take advantage of her expertise.
You too can take advantage of Dr Michelle’s exotic experience (at GP prices!), every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the Old Mill Animal Hospital.
