Feb2015_DAYBORO CELEBRATES 60 SHOWS on JULY 4th and 5th 2015

Our Show is held in July each year and falls on the 27th weekend of the year, which is why this year it is the first weekend instead of the second weekend which we have been used to.  All shows in Queensland are given a set date, and it is not easy to chop and change this.
We are affiliated with the Queensland Chamber of Ag. Societies and must run our show in accordance with their Guidelines.  This means we are to promote the basics of Agriculture, Horticulture and Industry within our area.  Of course, the big ‘Agriculture’ has almost gone from the district now, but almost everyone can grow a tomato bush, or a lemon tree – this is ‘Agriculture’.  Horticulture is the growing of plants – so our Horticulture section looks forward to great displays of pot plants and cut flowers – of course this depends on the weather!  Industry – well most of our industries are home based these days – sewing, baking, welding – almost anything that can be made is industry.

We are very fortunate in Dayboro to have such a wealth of talent, and also a lot of hidden talent.  I would like to challenge every family in our District to enter a minimum of one ‘thing’ whether it be a chook, a flower, a cake, handcraft item, bottle of honey, bottle of home brew – there are countless items that you can enter, at a very moderate fee of course, and who knows – you could become the Champion Exhibitor of the Show.

Schedules for all sections are currently being updated – I already have the Handcraft Section, and it is very exciting – open to kids and adults alike, as are all the sections.

Our theme of  course is DIAMOND.  Each section is to try to incorporate this in one of their classes – for Craft it is Handmade Card Diamond (60th) theme – Anniversary, Birthday etc, so there is a heads-up for you and you can start planning now.  It is in the Open Section which is for exhibitors 18 years and over, however there is a ‘Card’ class in every age group from 3 years upwards, so everyone can have a go.
Belated happy new year to everyone – who would have thought that February would be here already.  That means that our Diamond Jubilee Show is less than six months away!
Since I last contributed, the new Rodeo complex is finished, apart from the few little tweaks that need to be done – what a wonderful facility this is, and thanks to the Rodeo Association for pulling this project together.  The administration building is coming along really well now – the final stages of interior painting are under way, then it will be another working bee or three to lay the flooring, then we can start to move in.  Yay!!!There will still be outside work to do e.g. steps, deck, gutters, painting etc, but it will happen, and hopefully most of it before the Show.  The Historical Society is assisting us with some of the early information about the Show.  We have discovered that we are missing several schedules – we have a copy of some of the information out of the very first one, but the whole schedule is missing.  If anyone has one, would we be able to borrow it please to copy it for our own archives.  We are missing also Minutes of the early meetings – these were inadvertently destroyed while incorrectly stored – prior to my time as Secretary!  Just a note – if you have been involved in ANY organisation, please be aware that all records are most important – they may not seem so to you 10 or 20 years after the event, however they are the history of said organisation and should be returned to (a.) the organisation if it still exists;  or (b.) the Dayboro Historical Society.  I’ll just get off that particular High Horse and get back to what I am supposed to be writing about.

It has come to our attention that many people do not know what the Show Society is or what it does or offer to the community.
The Memorial Showgrounds is owned by the Dayboro War Memorial Association, with Moreton Bay Regional Council being the trustees.  The Show Society holds a long term lease with Council, and the Soccer Club and Football Club hold shorter term leases.  The Rodeo Association, Dayboro Pony Club and Dayboro Trailriders each hold a legal agreement with the Show Society for their tenancies.  According to our Constitution our objectives are to run an annual agricultural show and to provide facilities for the general use of the community, and this is something that we are very passionate about, and do our best to uphold.

The Show Society pays all the bills for the maintenance and improvements to our side of the now-hidden waterway.  We operate the Camping area for short term travellers and also a Ladies Auxiliary that fundraises by way of catering at the Rodeo and Show.  Over the years the catering has declined as people no longer have the ‘spare time’ to commit to ongoing jobs, but are prepared to come and help out occasionally, which is greatly appreciated.  This is where the Camping area has come into its own, and by charging a very reasonable sum we are able to pay our bills.  If we didn’t have this opportunity, the Show Society would possibly be in very dire straights.

I think I’ve waffled long enough and the Editor will probably want to shoot me, so I’ll sign off for now, but keep checking our Facebook page for information about the show.

Cheers,
Alison Taylor – Secretary.
