Feb2013_Dancer calls Petrie home
A highly sought after performer of American Tribal Style Bellydance is a proud new resident of Petrie and will soon offer beginner classes.
Rita Markwell will teach this style that evolved in San Francisco and blends belly dance and Gypsy traditions like Flamenco.
The costumes have an ancient feel and can include coin bras, cowrie shells, fringe belts, hip tassels, headdresses, flowers and tribal jewellery from Afghanistan.
“This dance style has become a passion for thousands of women around the world” says Rita.
Rita was drawn to leafy Petrie because of its friendly atmosphere but also by Soul Dance School of Middle Eastern and Romany Dance.
Rita’s classes will start in February at the Soul Dance studio and be open to women who’ve never danced before.
She says that belly dance is wonderful for women of all ages, especially when pregnant or after having kids.
“I had my first child early last year and my last dance performance was about a month before my daughter was born.”
“Dance is an enjoyable form of body conditioning. It can either be a great escape, or something precious to share with loved ones. I hope to dance with my daughter one day.”
Rita, also known as the Hush Gypsy, was based with the Canberra Dance Theatre for five years.
Over the past few years she has taught and performed at numerous dance and music festivals around the country.
She puts her success down to her training with some of the most inspiring teachers and artists in Australia, USA and Canada, as well her love of dance.
“The secret to reaching your best with dance is to love it” Rita says.
