Feb2011 OBITUARY: WALTER FISHCLE

Walter Fishcle was born 11-3-1924, the youngest of 7 children born to Christian Johann and Wilhelmina Louisa Schmidt.  His sisters and brothers were Freda, Philip, Charlie (Chas), Louisa, Wilhelmina and Ernest.
Wal spoke fondly of his childhood which was spent on the family farm located at the junction of May and Laceys Creek Roads, Laceys Creek, via Dayboro.  Wal attended Laceys Creek School.  After finishing 7th grade, he worked on the farm until he went into the army in 1942.
During World War II, Wal served with the 35th Australian Infantry Battalion in New Guinea.  On his return to Australia he worked for Australia Post, and later the Commonwealth Public Service for both the Department of Labour and National Service, and then the Bureau of Statistics until his retirement.  During this time Wal lived at Clayfield, Brisbane. Walter often returned to Dayboro to partake in many of the celebratory days, including Anzac Day.
In keeping with his quiet and unassuming ways, Wal was interested in wildlife and all things natural.  His home library contained a great collection of books on local birdlife, flora and fauna, and he was a dedicated supporter of Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland.
Early 2010 Wal was diagnosed with cancer.  Although he was given only a few months to live, Wal proved them wrong and lived on until 5th December 2010.
Much loved and sadly missed by his family and friends who considered him to have been an extra ordinary man.
