DO NOT LOSE YOUR PET

do_not_lose_your_pet.jpgIt has been a growing concern of ours with the increase in numbers of lost animals being dropped into us at the Old Mill Veterinary Surgery.  Whether it is due to storms, fireworks, inadequate containment or simply adventurous pets moving to the area, more and more are taking to the streets.

Fortunately, caring locals who spot these wandering animals drop them in to the clinic but the concern is the majority of these pets have no form of identification on them.  Collars are often lost or damaged before they reach us and it becomes very difficult to get in touch with the owners.  By having your pet microchipped, it makes the process of being reunited with your lost pet a lot easier and quicker.

What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a means of non-removable identification for your pet.  A small silicon implant, about the size of a grain of rice, is placed under the skin, and once implanted, it cannot be removed, lost, destroyed or altered in any way.  Each chip has a unique identification number, which is stored on a national database, which can then be matched to the owner’s details.  All veterinary surgeries, council pounds and refuges have microchip scanners, which are used on every lost animal that gets brought through their doors.

What to do:

If you do find a lost dog or cat wandering the streets, please take them to your local vet clinic or council, where they can be scanned for a microchip.  If your dog or cat happens to go missing, please contact the local vet clinics and by giving a detailed description, it allows us to identify your four-legged friend if they come in.  It is also advisable to contact local councils and RSPCA animal refuges in case your pet has already been taken there.  We urge you to microchip your pet so if you are separated, the time in which you are reunited is shortened.

As an incentive and a way to decrease the number of Dayboro pets not finding their owners, we at the Old Mill Veterinary Surgery are offering all cat and dog microchips at the discounted price of $33.00 (normally $55.00) until the end of August.  Please call the clinic on 3425 2222 to make an appointment and receive this discount.
